American Family Series in Miami with David Alan Harvey

As one of America's most culturally diverse cities, Miami offers a perfect location to examine at the changing face of the American family. With a thriving immigrant community blending in this exciting urban atmosphere, Miami is a wonderful photographic playground on which attendees can base an intensive narrative storytelling adventure.

Discussions of Lead Instructor David Alan Harvey's ongoing "American Family" project will be the conceptual focus of this workshop. His travels examining the fabric of the American culture and sense-of-self are the backdrop of this ongoing workshop series. Students can see and explore the development of a body of work crafted over time by one of America's most well-known photographers. They can then explore their own interpretations on the theme while being guided by Harvey through the challenges of creating their own photo narrative. This workshop is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore story development with a master as it takes place in real-time.

During the workshop, participants will produce a photo essay proposal around the theme, The American Family. David Alan Harvey and Momenta will advice photographers before the workshop on ways to hone the story for the best use of their time at the workshop. Students will work on this essay for four days during the workshop under the supervision of the workshop instructors and staff.

Attendees will receive one-on-one editing and hands-on instruction from our workshop staff to hone their strengths and overcome any weaknesses. If you are a more intermediate photographer, we will help you craft projects to grow your photography and take your vision to the next level.

The workshop fees include one-on-one access to instructors on a daily basis, personal portfolio reviews, all handouts and workshop materials, daily slideshows and lectures, and a Miami public transportation pass. Students are free to arrange their own transportation and hotel accommodations to fit within their budget. For those who are interested, Momenta has arranged special rates at area hotels for our students. Please contact our staff for itinerary and travel arrangement questions.

Important Workshop Notes: Students must bring their own equipment, including laptop, cameras and software. An online downloadable trial version of Photo Mechanic is available for all our students and can be purchased at a discounted rate. David Alan Harvey requests that each student send a portfolio or a link to work online before applying for this workshop. Please contact our staff for details on this process.
