Bitter Fruit: Pictures from Afghanistan

Afghanistan's history is one of regular invasion and battle for self definition. Since the 19th century the country has become a pawn in international politics and rarely out of the news. 'Bitter Fruit' is an exhibition featuring photographs of Afghanistan through the decades, including Eve Arnold's early documentation into the custom of the veil, Thomas Dworzak's unusual 'found' portraiture of Taliban fighters and work from Abbas' new book 'In Whose Name?'.

Susan Meiselas will give a lecture and book signing around ‘In History’, her newest body of work. Produced as a touring exhibition and book in partnership with the ICP in New York and publisher’s Steidl, ‘In History’ is a detailed look at Meiselas’ career as a documentary photographer and focuses on three iconic bodies of work; Carnival Strippers, the Nicaraguan revolution and Kurdistan.

Acclaimed Iranian photographer Abbas' will present a lecture in conjunction with the launch of his new book ‘In Whose Name? The Islamic World After 9/11’, published by Thames & Hudson. The culmination of seven years journeying around sixteen Islamic countries including Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Kenya and Thailand, this book documents the effect the attacks on the Twin Towers had on the Islamic community.

Aimed at keen amateurs and emerging professionals, this event will provide participants with an honest evaluation and critical analysis of their photographic work. Reviews will be 20 minutes long and each participant will be reviewed by 3 different Magnum photographers including David Alan Harvey, Stuart Franklin, Susan Meiselas, Mark Power and Alex Webb.
