Violet Isle - A Portrait Of Cuba

Ricco/Maresca Gallery is pleased to present Violet Isle: a portrait of Cuba by the photographers Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb, in conjunction with the launch of their 144 page, full color book of photographs, Violet Isle: A Duet of Photographs of Cuba, published by Radius Books.

In this exhibition, the two photographers, with their very distinct aesthetics, have collaborated to present a multi-layered portrait of "the violet isle" - a little known name for Cuba inspired by the rich color of its soil. In exhibiting the photographs of Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb together, Violet Isle presents an exceptionally insightful and intriguing impression of Cuba, inspired by the country's last fifty years of history and culture.

Alex Webb is best known for his vibrant and complex color photography, and especially for his works which focus on Latin America and the Caribbean.  He has published eight books. Alex has exhibited at museums worldwide, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego.  His work is in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Metropolitan
Museum of Art, NYC, and the Guggenheim Museum of Art, NYC.  He became a full member of Magnum Photos in 1979. Alex received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2007 in support of his ongoing project in Cuba.

For the past decade, Rebecca Norris Webb has been exploring the complicated and vulnerable relationships that exist between people and the natural world.  Originally a poet, she has exhibited her photographic work internationally, at museums and galleries, including the George Eastman House Museum of Photography and Ricco/Maresca Gallery, New York, NY.  Her first book, The Glass Between Us, was published in 2006. Rebecca is currently working on a series in the American West called My Dakota.
