The Unguarded Moment - Photography by Steve McCurry

As a photographer, I am sustained by the rhythms of everyday life: the routines of herding and fishing; the chanting of prayers and the hawking of wares. Where do humans sleep? How do we feed ourselves? How do we keep warm? For me, documenting the infinitely varied ways we meet these fundamental human needs has proven to be a profound journey.

Black Line of Woods

For "Picturing the South" Soth produced a series of twelve large archival pigment prints exploring spiritual and hermetic life in the rural South. The first works by the artist to enter the High's collection, the photographs will premiere in an exhibition at the Museum this summer. "Alec Soth: Black Line of Woods" will be on view at the High from August 8, 2009, through January 3, 2010.

Economy of Scale

Is bigger better? Is smaller intimate and, therefore, precious? Does a particular size better serve the content of a photograph? The title Economy of Scale is more poetic than literal. Our purpose is to raise questions about the size of the photographic print, as well as present evidence of the impact of economies of scale upon our lives.

Invasion 68: Prague

In 1968, Josef Koudelka was a 30-year-old acclaimed theater photographer who had never made pictures of a news event. That all changed on the night of August 21, when Warsaw Pact tanks invaded the city of Prague, ending the short-lived political liberalization in Czechoslovakia that came to be known as Prague Spring.
