In Person: Susan Meiselas

Susan Meiselas will give a lecture and book signing around ‘In History’, her newest body of work. Produced as a touring exhibition and book in partnership with the ICP in New York and publisher’s Steidl, ‘In History’ is a detailed look at Meiselas’ career as a documentary photographer. Focusing on three iconic bodies of work; Carnival Strippers, the Nicaraguan revolution and Kurdistan, it explores her own preoccupations with the journey of photographic images, exploring the contexts for their reuse and the nature of their changing relationship in time, to the original subject matter.

An acclaimed photographer, Meiselas is best known for her work covering the political upheavals in Central America in the 1970s and '80s, Her process has evolved in radical and challenging ways as she has grappled with pivotal questions about her relationship to her subjects, the use and circulation of her images in the media, and the relationship of images to history and memory. Her consistent engagement with these concerns has positioned her as a leading voice in the debate on contemporary documentary practice.

'In History' was the recipient of this year’s Kraszna Kraus Book Award.
